the meaning of quiet
Quiet...:)
Quiet...:/
QQUUUUIIIIIEEEEETTTT!!!!!!
As soon as you have a child, the meaning of quiet is greatly altered. The, what you thought were, quietest things seem extremely loud:
the bark of a neighbors dog
the sound of the air conditioner/heater kicking on
the mailman delivering to the mailbox (which is about 40 feet from our front door)
a bird chirping
the water running
the dishwasher in quiet mode
a whisper
the garbage collector
All these things become something...quite different in a mother's eyes:
A LOUD BEAR GROWLING
THE SOUND OF A SPACE ROCKET LAUNCHING
THE SOUND OF A NASCAR SPEEDWAY
A PTERODACTYL SCREECHING FOR ITS PREY
NIAGRA FALLS
AN INDUSTRIAL WASHING MACHINE ON OVERLOAD
SOMEONE YELLING AT A CONCERT
THE SOUNDS FROM A SCRAP-METAL YARD
I can remember a scenario that ALMOST played out when Luke was only a few month old. I was up feeding Luke for his nightly feeding. He ate so peacefully and was pretty much asleep (mind you it is 4 a.m, this was his 2nd feeding, I am VERY tired and not thinking clearly, so try not to judge). Then, there it was, THE TRASH COLLECTORS!!! I could have screamed. Instead, I thought to myself, "Maybe if I just go ask them really nicely to come back at another time they could make a note of it in their route not to come by, until around 7am. Yeah that could work!" I think I even made it to the front door (in my pjs, breath stanky, and hair a hot-mess) before I realized how ridiculous the request I was about to make sounded. Thankfully I came to my senses and the scenario did not ensue.
I now believe that noises, such as the aforementioned, probably have nothing to do with a baby waking.
Taking a nap while Luke was napping was never successful. I would finally fall asleep and then wake up nervous that I hadn't heard him. Quietly and gingerly, I would pull my hand out from under the blanket to touch the button on the monitor that turns on the screen (like he could hear me moving). I'd look at the video monitor and he hadn't moved. So I would try and snuggle back under the blanket as quietly and smoothly as I could (as if I would wake him with the little movement I was making). TOO LATE! He would inevitably wake up right then. I thought he could hear me squirming around on the couch, but now I realize he was just knew I was trying to sleep and he would have NONE OF THAT! No sleep for you (says the sleep nazi).
I can also recall another scenario where I was being as busy as I could be while Luke was napping, trying to get as much accomplished as I could. I was so busy I forgot to check the monitor and then I would look at the clock. 2 hours had passed since he had fallen asleep, and this NEVER happened! So, I would look at the monitor and he would be sleeping. I would "oooo and awwww" at the screen and then...he would wake (I guess I should add, "pressing the monitor button" to the list of loud sounds). It was like he could feel me watching him and he didn't like it (this scenario played out many times).
Now, I fully appreciate and understand the meaning of the word quiet. I also now understand that what I think could be waking my son is just a figment of my imagination...he's just a baby:)

Haha! Hilarious and it's so true! But I prefer to think that we now have a mothers intuition and can tell when they are going to wake up before they do :)
